This doesn't make any sense, the guy I beat gained ranking? wtf?

I'm going to take a guess as to what happened here:

You have a higher rating than the norm.
The other guy has a far lower rank / hasn't played in the ladder yet.

Now, when someone loses to a higher ranked player, they lose less rating and when someone loses to a lower ranked player, they lose more rating. Correct?

So, let's say someone new joins the ladder. They face a lower than the norm ranked player, and get a low initial ranking; let's assume it's -300. However, let's say that first fight is against the top player in the ladder. That rank will have to be higher than the one in the previous scenario, and due to certain circumstances, the rank goes up instead (let's say +200).

I didn't explain that well, and there's a chance that I'm completely wrong, but that's what I think happened.

Look at that fight, his rank wasn't that bad yet, my rank went higher, and so did his

How do you get a higher rank for losing? like wtf

Basically, everyone starts with a stupid low rating (way lower than the average) and it slowly progresses you to the middle rating if you win/lose games evenly [which is what it's doing here].

What's happening here is your first 10-20 matches or so, the system is trying to correctly place you in a good starting place for you to work up(or down) from. So losing in these very early matches can actually increase your rating a bit as the system places you around.
