I hope i'm doing this in the right place.I would just like to know, who would prefer ELO over the current ranking system. I would 100%. It was much easier to understand, and easier to determine high and low.

The admins already said that ELO won't come backPosted on 14 February 2017 - 05:11 AM
I mean it's never coming back. Although I do still miss itLast edited on 14 February 2017 - 05:40 AM by Msging
Personally liked ELO more purely because of the way ranking up and down works with the current system.Posted on 14 February 2017 - 07:53 AM
Easier to determine high and low? What's that supposed to mean? There isn't really much to understand about mmr, not that understanding it is really important. Mmr rewards skill over consistency unlike Elo which does the opposite. I personally prefer that, but it's a matter of opinion.Posted on 14 February 2017 - 09:56 AM
First of all, elo isn't coming backAnd my personal opinion is MMR is a way better system because of the placement system. The only benefit of elo is that you see a number.

mmr doesnt reward skill over consistency, when getting masters debuff id probably encounter 3 emerald ranked players for every 1000 poiunts, the rest was grinding idiots who didnt know how to play, mmr is exactly like elo with the way it has been changed.

Oh boyAlright, so as someone who has properly studied Elo and made simulations to test the theory, I can assure you that it is entirely revolving around consistency, and one extra fight that you drop (Minecraft crashing, hacker, etc.) can take another 30 to get back up to where you were based on your skill level. Also, if you just get bad luck and fight the wrong people, you can get drained even if you follow the theory (where you should win 31 out of 32 matches versus someone ~640 points below you, and as you get closer you get less). As well as this, there is the aspect that it does not account for significant levels of consistency; if a 2200 is absurdly consistent and you keep on queuing them as an 1800, you will get drained a solid 50 points if you queue them enough. That is a lot and quite frankly sucks as it's entirely unfair. The Elo system is actually unfavourable for Chess since Chess is a game of knowledge and proper actions; it's hard to win 31 out of 32 matches to anyone really. If you're better than someone, you'll win nearly (if not) all the time. Minecraft is a game where there are far too many uncontrolled variables to use a system centred around consistency.
Now for MMR: MMR is designed in such a way that it incorporates streaks; if you're on a massive win streak, you'll gain a lot of points because it shows improvement. If you consistently win from the start of the matches (but are still around Gold IV or whatever) and someone else higher rated like Gold III, they won't be drained too many points since you are clearly meant to be rated much higher than you are. Badlion doesn't use pure MMR and is actually closer to Elo than pure MMR, but it nevertheless uses many of the positive traits of MMR.
As well as this, hundreds of PHD and high level computer scientists support MMR as a system, and could certainly back it up a hell of a lot more than a 14 year old who coded an Elo simulator like myself. Trust me when I say that MMR is better than Elo.

With the current implementation of MMR, this is not true.

Cool post! I have never seen one like this before!Posted on 14 February 2017 - 01:19 PM
There's no point in even mentioning elo because the owners already made their decision and there's no changing their minds now.Posted on 15 February 2017 - 06:58 AM
This community is far too small for a good MMR systemPosted on 16 February 2017 - 06:22 AM
Before, they said they will never move away from elo, but they did. I'm thinking (and hoping) the same kind of thing happens and it is switched backPosted on 16 February 2017 - 06:24 AM
I would explain why elo is so much better if it is necessary, but I don't really feel like it right now. Why, because there are so many reasons and it would take forever to write.Posted on 16 February 2017 - 10:25 PM

1. Elo has one scale, MMR has 262. Because there are so many scales, people can avoid a demote match and be higher on the leaderboard than they should be.
3. Because MMR uses items instead of numbers for the ranks, it can be confusing to new players.
4. MMR does use numbers for divisions, however, they are backwards, which can be confusing to new players.
5. Elo is just one numerical value and is very easy for anyone to understand.
6. Elo is a much better and simpler test of consistency and skill.
7. Elo has a more understandable infinite scale (with masters + points, you have to do a bit of other math and doing division to find how much higher someone is more difficult than it needs to be, with Elo, you would just subtract 1400, then divide).
8. Because the amount of points gained and lost is unbalanced, two players could constantly queue each other and go up slightly.
9. With Elo having been used in the past, you can actually compare the growth of the community as well as the growth or rank of two or more different players with the past and present.
10. A lot of the best players seem to have left because of the change.
There you go, now think about which system is better
