At first glance -
Nike is dedicated to athletes, sports, fitness, performance and the core belief that anyone can be an athlete (yes…questionable) and exhibit top level performance if they “just do it”. While Nike has successfully and not so successfully dabbled in other areas of consumer products and acquired non sports first focused brands the above outline is and will be for the foreseeable future their main mission statement and position of the brand.
VS
Adidas by contrast does not have a memorable or singular brand message by which the consumer can remember them (we can discuss the pro’s and cons of this later on) but that has not stopped them from moving to the no.2, then 3 and back to no.2 spot in terms of footwear and sportswear sales.
In terms of footwear and brand focus Adidas is somewhat all over the place. They are the number one sponsor of many soccer teams and their soccer cleats and worldwide they dominate soccer (eg. Worldcup 2014) but this competition is stiffening and Nike has closed in dramatically. They still have consistently beat out and dominated Nike’s and other brands offerings. Do not be fooled by Nike signing large names and creating some of the more memorable soccer and brand commercials.
Let’s move out of soccer though as that is not where the core of my knowledge and expertise rests.
A key differentiator for Adidas is that they enjoy a rich following since the early 80’s with hiphop and Urban culture. This can be attributed to their early relationship with RUN DMC, which was the first entertainment group or musicians to ever sign an endorsement deal/contract with a footwear brand.
Today Adidas continues to align themselves with a heavy and deep roster of worldwide superstars that the general public, underground culture and millennials are very familiar with. Japanese fashion, which is a forward thinking look and is considered to be one of the best in the world is brought to life with their Y-3 line and current Alexander Wang offerings. Japanese fashion and collaborations is extremely important to any brand but I won’t dive into that too deeply in this response. Of note, Nike also collaborates with several Japanese brands and individuals and have several Japanese designers on their core design team.
Performance -
Nike used to enjoy a deeper and richer history with runners and other athletes but brands outside of both Adidas and Nike has given them heavy competition due to several reasons it’s not necessary to expand on here. For many sports such as basketball, Nike is still the leading favorite and dominates that share of the market.
For running, soccer and other sports there might be more of a closer split but Nike is still the number 1 footwear and sportswear brand in the world by a more than healthy margin.
Urban Perception -
Adidas is dominating Nike by leaps and bounds at the moment and investors are actually worried about Nike. They don’t seem to be innovating as quickly as they once did, competition is extremely stiff from almost every major brand and yearly at least two new brands come up that catches the attention of the sneaker community. Nike has made several huge missteps in not signing Stephen Curry, letting Kanye West go so easily and turning down BASF Boost Technology which Adidas picked up and has largely used to dominate 2014/2015. It has been successful that it has now been introduced in many of their OG models, basketball line and other recent models where sales were declining.
Clear Differences Summary -
Adidas shoes are generally cheaper by 6 to 1
Nike dominates the basketball market but sales are declining
Nike is the worlds No. 1 Footwear and Sportswear brand
Adidas is the worlds No. 2. Footwear and Sportswear brand though they lost that position briefly to Under Armour in late 2014/2015 but has reclaimed it in 2o16.
Adidas is perceived as making more comfortable shoes.
Adidas is more popular in 2o16 than Nike.
Urban Runners and Fitness enthusiasts still prefer Nike to Adidas.
Urban youths currently prefer Adidas over Nike
Adidas continues to seem innovative with monthly releases of new or adapted models and almost weekly or bi-weekly NMD offerings.
Adidas has the Yeezy line which is one of the strongest and most sought after sneaker models and lines of any brand at the moment. It is so popular that many brands have copied it or it’s use of specific patterns for the upper.

Same @Varsityy. Air force ones are clean. Which colorway(s) do you have?Posted on 11 May 2017 - 06:32 PM
Outlets stay having uncopped heats tbh. Nobody ever goes to them, so it provides clean shoes with little to no competition, @jarecl.Posted on 11 May 2017 - 07:01 PM

I currently have Nike Air Force 1, Air Force 2 and Adidas Superstar. I don't really mind, I like both as long as they look good. c:
