This Tournament
This tournament was a mixed success. We tried out a new format known as the "Swiss-system," which is widely used across esports tournaments around the world, and despite some rough patches at first, it was successful toward the end. We look forward to continuing to experiment with that format in addition to Round Robin to run enjoyable tournaments in the future.
One particular issue which was brought up was waiting time; teams felt as though it was an unreasonable expectation for them to wait an hour between games. While I sympathize as a former player myself, and while we acknowledge that is something we look to improve on, teams also must understand that there are more than 60 teams and only 10 of us running games, so it's natural to expect a bit of a wait.
We encountered a number of sign-up issues as well. While this didn't affect most top teams, it did slow us down. More than a dozen players were registered under 2+ teams, which was a nightmare to sort out. As a result, we are looking into ways to be more proactive at preventing these problems by checking the rosters for these problems in advance.
Most other issues that arose were developer related. The server problems and lack of lobbies on Saturday and the config options being messed up are a few issues that have brought up to developers. The tournament team will in the future be meeting the week before tournaments to discuss potential issues, which will hopefully allow us to catch preventable problems. Still, we can't catch everything: If you notice something which you think will be a problem during the tournament, please let us know in #tourney-bugs in our Official Tournament Discord!
Pushing Competitive MC Forward
We're excited about the high sign-ups for this tournament and the stream viewership reaching over 100. We hope to build on these successes with many more competitive initiatives over this next year.
You may have noticed that after a brief break, tournaments are speeding up again. We are hosting a Bow tournament this weekend, and we have another one with a familiar 5v5 team gamemode in the works soon. As always, we are in need of more helpers to help us put these events on. Helpers get the awesome perk of being able to watch these events live in-game. Apply today!
We have noticed how many communities enjoy putting on their own regional tournaments, and we think that's great for building competitive interest outside of just English-speaking regions. We have opened up a group of new competitive forums for discussion in various languages, and we hope to begin hosting smaller regional tournaments as an introduction to newer teams. You may notice that these reviews will now be hosted in these sections, as we hope these reviews inspire quality discussion!
We are beginning work on better documenting tournament-related topics. We will have guides on vetoes, bracket formats, and other things to help newer players understand how our tournaments work. We have made signing up for a tournament easier to understand by getting rid of the statement that had to be posted. In the near future, we hope to start translating major tournament threads into multiple languages to help bridge the language gap.
Our advertising and community awareness is stepping it up as well. We are still accepting applications into our Tournament Media Group! This weekend, we had streamers in multiple languages, something we hope to continue to do. Our new Badlion Twitch is opened up, where future tournaments will be streamed. We plan to release montages and trailers to hype future tournaments, and hope to advertise in various other ways both on and off the network.
If you want to help out tournaments in other ways, the Build Team does great work for tournaments and has been expanding quite a bit recently! Work on anything from Capture the Wool, to Survival Games, to new gamemodes. They are accepting applications here, so apply today if you're interested!
Overall, this is a very exciting time for Badlion and competitive Minecraft in general. We hope you guys stay with us as we expand and host bigger and better events in 2018. And finally, thank you all for making our events great by playing in them!

Questions for discussion:Do teams enjoy these "qualifier" formats where you play a bunch of teams in Round Robin or Swiss and then the top teams advance to a bracket?
What are your ideas for spreading the word about these tournaments? How could we better attract people?
Is SG a gamemode worth pursuing further as a competitive gamemode and a spectator sport?
Are vetoing systems worth it in these group/swiss rounds where many teams don't fully understand them? Would it be better if it were just a random gamemode or map until the bracket?

Gg's to everyone. Was a fun tournament and I would def like to see Qualifiers with Swiss / Round Robin and a bracket stage with 8/16 teams.
I also think SG is a gamemode that's definitely worth pursuing further as a competitive gamemode because there's a huge playerbase and community that will show up where as something else might not be as big, meaning less competitive.
Thanks for hosting!

I must admit, it was an EXCELLENT tournament, I hope you will spend even more than something like that!Posted on 09 January 2018 - 11:32 AM
Qualifier Format:Ye I think for any team knowing you will have at least X number of games is a lot more fun
Once the timing have improved and the Tournament Team are used to hosting them I think they will run very smoothly and allow for exciting Bracket Stages
Spreading the Word:
As you said trailers are a great way to get the tournament out there
I really think if Badlion kick started their channel and posted all things from Arena to UHC to Comp MC, it would gather in thousands of subscribers and then can be used as a medium to advertise the tournaments but also have community made videos like MCUnbreakbale giving tips and tricks to any newcomers
Pursuing SG:
In my opinion SG turned out to be a lot better competitively than I expected.
I still think are certain issues that limit its competitiveness like the RNG of chests and the lack of objective, however at this stage it is the most popular gamemode for both teams and spectators and should keep getting tweaked
I think in the long run there would be better gamemodes out there but at the moment as it is popular a goal would be to try and get the OCN teams into SG and the SG teams in the diamond series gamemodes
Vetoing System:
I think it would be very interesting to try out random maps for these rounds as it can make it more interesting if a team cant veto their favourite map
Also would speed up the process a bit as all the staff need to do is make sure both teams are ready and then start a random match
But obviously once it gets to the Bracket, vetoing should 100% occur
