Hey guys. As promised this is the last owner AMA we will be doing on Badlion. Many of you know that we are closing Badlion Network in a couple of weeks. For those of you who do not know about that you can read more here:Some fast FAQ stuff for the common questions.
Is Badlion Client closing too?
No Badlion Client is not closing down. We are keeping the Badlion Client open and are actively still developing it. You can find out more about the client here: https://client.badlion.net
Can I ask a question about financials or anticheat tech?
No, we will not answer questions about this stuff.
Will you sell Badlion Network to anyone else?
No we will not sell Badlion Network to anyone else. It belongs to Turtle Entertainment Online and will remain in their ownership.
Will Badlion Network open again in the future?
Very unlikely. We have had a good 5 years here at Badlion and don't plan on re-opening the network to try and grab fast cash from our users. Competitive Minecraft is not what it was a few years ago and is declining along with the game as a whole rather than growing.
I still have a question!
Ask away below :)

Do you have plans to work with other servers to try to get rid of other cheaters? For example, work with hypixel to implement BAC only matches in ranked skywars or other minigames on the server? I know that you have worked with servers such as gommehd in the past, but do you plan to do the same with other big pvp networks?Posted on 26 May 2018 - 11:30 AM
We will work with any server who wants to use BAC, all they have to do is contact us. Due to the way that possible cheats work, we cannot just force BAC anywhere, the server also has to install some software.Posted on 26 May 2018 - 11:31 AM
We are actively talking to other servers such as Hypixel to try and reduce down the number of cheaters in Minecraft. Any servers that want to get in touch with us about using BAC on their server should be emailing us at bac [at] badlion [dot] netWould be awesome if we could get enough of the community on BAC to help cut down on the number of cheaters.

Do you still think competitive pvp is still possible with open closing? What gave you motivation to run this network for 5 years?
How pleased are you guys with the client? What things do you think should improved on?
Favorite music genre?
Favorite musical artist?
Posted on 26 May 2018 - 11:39 AM
I think the competitive pvp community will have a small niche in the various servers, but I think the direction that Minecraft has taken has pushed it away from a serious esports possibility.I loved working on Badlion Network for the first 3-4 years. This last year has been a lot harder…I really took a lot of joy in doing what I did here and feel like in the end I really did help make a difference in the scheme of Minecraft.
I'm really happy with the client progress at the moment. I know things have been a bit slow this past month because we have just been focusing so much on bug fixes and stability. I can safely say in the next week or two there are some really big updates coming and then a lot of little requests will start flying out the door.
I like the typical pop/rock stuff.
Don't have a particular favorite artist.

Esports no, competitive sure, but I'm unsure who will push it forward. Badlion was always the server pushing it farther and farther, and without us I think it'll stay as is with little change. The community is mostly amazing. I would have quit this years ago after I lost interest in the game if it wasn't for the community.
I like the client. I haven't had much interaction with it since it's early stages where I did a lot of the planning. I think it needs improvement aesthetically with the mods.
I listen to a lot from Kpop, metal, electronic, rock.
If I had to guess, it would be Girls' Day (kpop band). I haven't listened to them in years, but they were definitely have been a favorite and I no longer have a favorite.

One of the main goals of Badlion was to make Minecraft an eSport,In the last Player Council Meeting, Archy briefly mentioned the downfall of badlion, saying something along the lines of
"If nothing changes, we might have to completely change the direction of the network"
In response to this many PC members suggested making the server completely eSports / Comp based (CTF, CTW) in which Archy said that was a possibility
Question:
Was there any discussion of turning Badlion solely into an eSports / OCN type server rather than completely closing the network?
Posted on 26 May 2018 - 11:41 AM
We discussed so many possibilities for Badlion Network I could write a book ehre about it. The reality is we don't believe in esports for Minecraft anymore. Microsoft and Mojang have pointed too much to it not being an interest to them with their public statements for us to try and push it ourselves anymore. With the decline of Minecraft and other competitive games eating our community up, our faith has been lost.
Posted on 26 May 2018 - 11:44 AM
I had discussions but nothing really happened other than ideas. Depending on how the client does, you could see client only matches and such either on our partnered servers, or internal like we had PUG in premium. We will never make a full fledged network with the BL name afaik.Posted on 26 May 2018 - 11:40 AM
Will Archy open up another network W/ GBerry Help? Will Archy open up a small Roblox game (places as called in roblox) network?
Will Archy try to open up GMod server again?
What will GBerry do after the NBA thing?
Will GBerry stay with ESL?
Posted on 26 May 2018 - 11:42 AM
I don't understand the NBA thing exactly.I am staying with ESL for the moment and working on some other projects besides the Badlion Client (which I am still leading).

I meant NDA. I'm not sure if MasterGberry is NDA with ESLLast edited on 26 May 2018 - 11:44 AM by AudaxMC
With all the bugs and 'iffiness' in Minecraft PVP do you think there's ever a chance that it would have ever gained popularity as a real ESport? What would you consider the year you knew Minecraft was dying?
Also do you remember me?
Last edited on 26 May 2018 - 11:46 AM by Archybot
Yes, if microsoft would have supported it, or even just not got in the way of us.2017, early on
No sorry, name seems familiar but I can't put my finger on it.
Posted on 26 May 2018 - 11:45 AM
I really doubt it will happen unless Microsoft and Mojang start putting the multiplayer community before the singleplayer community. To be honest we thought Minecraft was fucked for years now…but it really started to take a bad toll in mid-2016 in terms of the competitive community and really started to fly downhill in 2017.
The name is familiar but I can't put the name to stories/memories right this second.
Posted on 26 May 2018 - 11:48 AM
I know this isn't a question but I just wanted to say thanks for being an awesome MC server that was open with the community although we were toxic as hell most of the time. And I used to be a builder / SG mod maybe that's where you remember the name from. I played countless hours on your server and don't regret a second of it (except maybe when I smashed my iPod from dying in a Build match LOL).Posted on 26 May 2018 - 11:51 AM
Ah yes this makes more sense. I figured it was a staff member but didn't want to look like an idiot in public! Thanks for your dedication to Badlion over time :)
Posted on 26 May 2018 - 11:46 AM
Which changes do you think made players quit?If you could go in the past of badlion and change something what would you change?
Would you rather be the richest men alive or be on a parallel universe where badlion would have been the most popualr server ever (50k) players online at almost everytime?
Why didn't bl premium succeed?
Last edited on 26 May 2018 - 11:51 AM by Archybot
Microsoft/mojang giving little to no fucks about our community, fortnite/pubg/overwatch, outdated game, in that order.I wouldn't have sold to ESL, nothing because of what ESL did, just I would have rather done it myself at this point.
Richest man alive, I could do anything I wanted and could affect way more people than I could on a minecraft server.
Premium failed because we had to abandon the project due to backroom issues. You guys didn't even get 20% of what was planned for premium and that whole platform.
Posted on 26 May 2018 - 11:53 AM
More popular/better designed games for what the players wanted. Minecraft helped to build the Battle Royale gamemode with UHC.If I could go back and do anything to change Badlion I would have done Badlion Premium & Badlion Client 2.0 a year before. They both would have been way more successful.
I mean almost no one would object to having some extra cash to do stuff but I don't really think it matters much here.
What Archy said, Premium never got fully published like it was supposed to. Unfortunately we got roadblocked.
Posted on 26 May 2018 - 11:49 AM
Why is social media STILL so neglected? I'm sure ESL will agree that hiring someone for it is very well worth, no?Posted on 26 May 2018 - 11:54 AM
Badlion isn't well liked on social media to be honest, so we didn't see it as very important. At certain times throughout the history of the network, my personal twitter had more interaction than the official BL twitter did.Badlion always grew through word of mouth and big youtubers appreciating what we did mutually. With the overall player count going down, and the big, loyal youtubers leaving minecraft, social media would have just slowed that down. Back in the day, an average youtuber or streamer would have dwarfed the largest nowadays in numbers and influence.
Posted on 26 May 2018 - 11:54 AM
I think social media is doing a good job. Don't know what your question is in regards to.Posted on 26 May 2018 - 11:58 AM
My question is in regards to how there wasn'a single community manager who even bothered (or was assigned to) checking social media, I'm talking simple stuff like looking up the keyword "badlion", not even monitoring accounts from the known players or any other "hard" task. It's also in regards to how there has to be someone dedicated to answering questions on twitter, being "funny" (wendys and bla bla) or simply announcing/advertising things like the cloaks or shouting out people and their videos on the client. Another quite "sad" thing is that the tournaments still haven't been tweeted out and that is not something you can excuse really, especially since SG signups have closed…
Posted on 26 May 2018 - 12:13 PM
We are a Minecraft server. We monitor the Twitter when we have time but we aren't a company making billions of dollars a year to need to dedicate someone to do that.Posted on 26 May 2018 - 12:41 PM
Yeah the problem isn't even aknowledged, thanks for your timeLast edited on 26 May 2018 - 11:55 AM by Slypering
If you had the decision to keep Badlion open and repurpose it, what would you turn it into?Do you think Mojang/Microsoft will ever make Minecraft a cheat free environment?
If you decided to stop development and the direction/connection of the Badlion Client, what other project/job would you move onto?
From operating the Badlion Network for 5 years, what would you say your best moment is on the network itself?
Would you say that you have enjoyed managing and owning a Minecraft Business for 5 years? Was there anything you liked about doing it and anything you didn't like about doing it?
Posted on 26 May 2018 - 11:59 AM
I do have the decision to keep Badlion open and repurpose it, but I just don't think it has a place in Minecraft anymore. It's too late for us to become a big minigame network.Nope.
I would find something new to work on. Maybe a new game.
Hitting 10,000 players was probably one of the best memories I had all of these years. That and meeting my girlfriend of over 3 years.
I really have enjoyed running a Minecraft business for the past 5 years, but this last year has been very trying/difficult. I like running projects and being a product manager. I also love developing but only when I feel like it or am interested in what I am working on.
Last edited on 26 May 2018 - 12:03 PM by Archybot
I would repurpose it away from competitive minecraft into something like an RPG/action game/something else, or go pure esport/competitive purely. No
I have no idea what we would do. I'm already focusing on my job at Boeing so that's where my priorities would continue to go. I would assume if BLC stops development the BL dev team will shut down fully or move onto a different game.
Its hard to say there is a best moment. There were several amazing moments such as hosting the first cash prize, hitting 12k users online, having the network crash due to the cube picking up BL all together and getting overloaded, the judgement days were we would catch "undetectable" cheats, and just overall watching me successfully lead a business while in university.
I would say it has it's up and downs, but overall I think currently it's more focused towards not enjoying it. This could just me being spiteful because of what's happened to the game overall in the last year. I did enjoy impacting tons of people and glad to see I was an important part of their childhood/life. I've been bombarded with so many private messages and such from people I don't even know saying how much they owe their life to me and how much I helped them through impossible circumstances without ever directly talking to them (of course I've had people directly connected to say the same thing). On the flip side, this community has a lot of pieces of shit and I've never been part of an online community that has, and sometimes embraces, so much illegal activity.
Posted on 26 May 2018 - 11:56 AM
What would be your biggest regret with the network? If Badlion had not come around to success where would you be today?
In our modern world do you believe their is the possibility of world peace? Or rather should it even be aimed for at our current state?
Theoretically, if Mojang had backed Badlion and the competitive scene, how would you feel it could compare to other esports?
Would either of you ever try to go into esports for another game? if so, which one?
Do you believe there are supernatural beings (not god or religious one) that humans rarely see but still believe in?
Posted on 26 May 2018 - 12:01 PM
Biggest regret with the network is MCP lol. Fuck that piece of software. Caused us so many problems and setbacks.I'd probably still be in California working at a Fortune 100 company…my whole life would be different tbh. I wouldn't be living in Europe, I would maybe be dating someone else? I wouldn't have gained a lot of the experience and memories I have and tbh I would be a very different person.
I don't think peace will ever exist while two people have different opinions about topics. War has been a part of the world for 1000s of years and it's not going anywhere.
If Mojang had given a damn about esports and Badlion I think we would actually have the game growing instead of dying off in the multiplayer community.
I wanted to get serious with League of Legends ages ago but was never good enough. At this point I'm contempt with being a top 1% player when I want to be and being a casual the rest of the time.
Not particularly, like I think there might be something out there but am not sure one way or the other.
Posted on 26 May 2018 - 12:20 PM
Probably allowing Gberry to make MCP when I was greatly opposed to it, or selling to ESL (yet again, nothing against ESL, I just think I would have enjoyed it more without them). Kohi is another big regret, if I knew what I was getting myself into I would have just let it slowly die instead.Probably still working for some tech company. Badlion was just a side road that I enjoyed doing while going through university.
No I don't think world peace is achievable or even worth bothering for, however we should be trying to at least reduce the amount of current war. The only way world peace would be achievable is if the world was ruled by a single government and everyone supports it. It is human nature to fight, conquer, and rise above, and without mass amounts of change and evolution that will never happen.
I think this game would be massive and probably one of the largest esports as this game has so many different styles of esports possible.
I've been very close to being pro level or at pro level in several games. I've been top 200 in HotS, was a master in SC2 with bad hands, was leading an amazing team in a game called crossfire, was a named gladiator multiple seasons in WoW (overall I'm just amazing at PvP in MMOs), and was also D1 in LoL when D1 was the highest you could be. As for leading esports, the only way I would go into it is if the actual company hired me to be part of it, I doubt I will do third party anymore.
In relation to not god(s)/religions figureheads, there probably is things such as ghosts/spirits/whatever. Whether or not they can actually interact with us on the physical plane I'm unsure of.
Posted on 26 May 2018 - 11:57 AM
What were your plans to update clans in Badlion, briefly? What did you think of Ultra, not meant to start beef at all, just want to think what the owners thought of it?
Do you remember me? My original IGN is TobL_ (I am quite popular and talked to GBerry a bit) (Also staff on Ultra and Grizzly etc)
Thanks for being such an amazing part of the community and so many peoples lives <3 RESPECT
Posted on 26 May 2018 - 12:04 PM
We were planning on giving a big upgrade to allow more customization of clans, clan wars, ranking, tournaments, etc. It just didn't happen because we decided to work with other servers instead of competing against them.Ultra took advantage of our lack of focus on Badlion Network when we were trying to push esports/Badlion Premium and ultimately was one of many factors that ruined the esprots possibility in Minecraft. We had to waste a lot of our time trying to maintain our player base, especially since so many of our youtubers were bought off to start shit talking Badlion and our Premium product that we were trying to do for the community. They forced more people to leave the game in the end, didn't help anyone.
Name again is familiar, but nothing too in depth.
Thanks :)
Posted on 26 May 2018 - 12:24 PM
We had a full fledged clan system done with clan battles, scrims, matchmaking, in game and website customization. It was actually done but never got pushed. Some of these features will make it into BLC however.I think Ultra hurt the community more than it helped. It absolutely screwed up UHC, and even though we won in the end, because the only reason they succeeded originally was money + taking advantage of our focus on other projects, a LOT of people left the community and it really messed with our esports plans which overall hurt the community more than their "competition" helped. However, now I think Ultra/MineHQ will help the community because it will be filling a gap that we are leaving open.
Name familiar, can't place actions to name though.
Thanks, it was my pleasure.

I'll ask some random questions that really don't fit Minecraft - the future of our society - as well as some pertaining to Minecraft.Do you think we'll see the legalization of recreational and medicinal cannabis in the next few years based on the new medical applications and uses? - in the United States
How do you feel about the possible upcoming changes in Net Neutrality?
Do you think Mojang will ever step out of their stubborn anti-pvp tactics and add a gamerule for 1.8/1.7 PvP? - from a developer's standpoint
Do you think the Minecraft community will ever return back to it's old state?
Would servers benefit in performance in any way by not having to support multiple versions (1.8-12.2 and soon 1.13.x)?
Do you think that Notch's new project will end up ironically rivaling his new game?
What do you think the future of Minecraft will be as a whole as the golden age of servers having 100k+ players is long gone
Do you think servers will ever almost universally use the same version again (I.E. how pretty much all servers were updated to 1.7/1.8 when they were the main versions)
And do you think Mojang should implement their own client sided anti-cheat with the risk of hurting the modding community?
Do you think that Hip-hop/rap (if you listen to it) is slowly getting degraded/washed down by new aged mumble rap?
Posted on 26 May 2018 - 12:07 PM
I think cannabis will become legalized in most of the US through the next few years. I went to a college where a lot of people smoked it. No real harm came out of it. It's just like alcohol but causes way less deaths lol. Not been around as long.Net Neutrality is a nightmare in the US. I don't wanna dive too far into politics so I will just say I am more left than right.
Nope. I think that Microsoft has their own objectives and wants to commercialize Minecraft and aim it towards little kids versus the original community it was built around. It's only going to get worse in my opinion.
Nope.
Of course servers would benefit from this, but that would mean Microsoft and Mojang would have to make a game that the multiplayer community wanted.
No clue about anything Notch is up to.
I think the online community will continue to shrink and it will become a little kids game and when people turn 13 they will get tired of it and move onto something else.
Nope. Never going to happen.
I think Mojang wouldn't even know how to begin doing this. It won't happen.
I'm not a good person to ask for music opinions tbh. I just listen to the trendy/popular stuff.
Posted on 26 May 2018 - 12:35 PM
If alcohol and tobacco are legal, weed should be legal too. I've never done weed and would have no plans to do it if made legal, but just logically it's stupid and tobacco is legal and weed isn't. I think more and more people are realizing this.Senate voted to restore net neutrality, up to the house now. To be honest, I think it won't be as bad as people think it will be if it fails to be restored, but it will still hurt. ISPs won't be able to get away with as much as pro-net neutrality people say they would because even in places in monopoly, too many angry customers will result in profit cuts.
Probably not, one of the largest problems with microsoft/mojang is they refuse to correct mistakes, if they even see it as a mistake. I think microsoft/mojang don't give a fuck about java and are purely focused on bedrock.
Not without changes to Mojang's philosophy of the game and patches and great advertisement.
You wouldn't notice a difference in performance to be real. There is basically nanoseconds to maybe a millisecond or two of difference in supporting multiple versions.
I hope it does
Java is dead unless something huge changes. Everyone knows this, we are just fighting to slow it down as much as we can.
^^ same as above, huge changes need to happen for that to happen
The biggest problem for that is "what is a cheat" and the fact it's java and they would have to do ring0
level AC to stop anything.
Fuck yes, I hate this current shit.

What's your favorite MC/Badlion memory?I'm too lazy to look it up, did OCN ever come back?
Do you think this game will ever actually die, or just settle into a runescape/terraria like homeostasis?
What other games are you getting in to?
Posted on 26 May 2018 - 12:08 PM
As a personal player, I really miss the old Civraft/HCF days when I used to just screw around as a player. Back in 2012/2013 time frame.OCN never came back.
It will probably hit that homeostasis thing eventually (at least online) as it continues to lose players.
Tbh I mostly play on my Nintendo Switch these days. I haven't found a new game online to really play yet..don't have many friends to play with online these days.
Posted on 26 May 2018 - 12:40 PM
Already answered as an owner, but I would say as a player my most fun was either leading BL to HCF map 8 victory when we got backstabbed or winning the first OCN tournament. No
I think it will eventually die, at least in MP as we know it.
Right now I'm playing SWToR as my "main game". I occasionally still play SC2, PUBG, and might get back into RS6 with a friend who just picked it up. I'm currently waiting on Ashes of Creation, Crowfall, maybe the new WoW expo, BO4 (it actually looks decent as a PC shooter finally, hasn't been that way since MW1/2), and AoE4.
Posted on 26 May 2018 - 12:01 PM
Opinon about me? xDWhat are your thoughts about minehq and cheatbreaker and how can blc compete with cheatbreaker?
What is your favorite sport and food?
If the competitive mc community seems like growing in minehq, will badlion come back?
If blc does not win against cheatbreaker, what will happen to badlion?
Posted on 26 May 2018 - 12:12 PM
Sorry don't know you well enuff to comment here.I think MineHQ is sitting on the sidelines waiting to do another quick summer money grab of the Minecraft community (or what's left of it) and then will leave again. I don't think Cheatbreaker has anything better than the Badlion Client and think quite the opposite. I think jhalt just does whatever interests him the most on a particular day and that fluctuates a lot.
I'm not much of a sports person. Used to love watching esports (League of Legends), but don't do that these days either. As far as food goes I love mexican food, Nachos has always been my favorite (good Mexican styled Nachos). I have taken a passion to cooking a lot more recently though and have been trying to learn new things to make. Something fun I do these days.
Badlion will probably not come back. What you are hoping for here isn't going to happen. It's all too little too late for the competitive MC community.
If Badlion Client stops getting used then Badlion will 100% shut down most likely. I don't see how Cheatbreaker has anything to do with it.
Posted on 26 May 2018 - 12:44 PM
I hate doing opinions unless you are super close to me, which you are not.MineHQ will attempt fill the gap of BL, but I don't think it'll be too much more successful then any of it's previous reincarnations, and it'll probably die after summer is over, just like the majority of servers I think are going to do. I hope it helps the community however as the rest of what is left slowly moves on. I really don't have a thought on CB until it releases, but afaik it's just for frozenorb servers so I don't care too much about it as a non-player non-server-owner.
Soccer (football for pretty much everyone else outside of US). As for food, I really enjoy sandwiches.
Badlion as a network isn't coming back. I might help other networks/work on one, but I need to believe in it and it has to be worth my time.
As I said earlier, I don't see how BLC/CB are competiting as BLC is for other servers, CB is only for frozenorb currently. I don't think BLC shutting down would have anything to do with CB, and would be more likely in relation to the fact that MC has died too much for anyone to give a shit about anti-cheats.

Knowing what you know now, what would you have done to establish MC as an e-sport if you could go back in time and do it all again?Posted on 26 May 2018 - 12:14 PM
Nothing differently to be honest. Mojang/Microsoft are the biggest problem here.Posted on 26 May 2018 - 12:45 PM
I would have pushed esports in 2015 instead of waiting until 2017 to do so, when minecraft was thriving.Posted on 26 May 2018 - 12:07 PM
Do you remember me?What advice do you have for 16 year olds?
Badlion used to be a very big part of my life. I'd like to thank you for creating and managing such an amazing community and for allowing me to create lasting memories within it. I had a great time.

Yes I actually remember you partially. Skilled player/staff member.Stay in school, but make sure you enjoy high school and don't purely focus on grades. Make friends, date, develop your social skills as much as you can. Also start teaching yourself restraint and commitment while you're still young.
It was a pleasure.

Most likely hidden to the public. Maybe we will do an archive, not sure yet.Posted on 26 May 2018 - 12:47 PM
Website will become dedicated to BLC, I want the old stuff to be archived. Also yes, ESL 100% owns BL and anything done since BL's sell.Posted on 26 May 2018 - 12:14 PM
Where's my pay-raise?Honestly though, in terms of UHC administration what were some of the lows and some of the highs that happened throughout all four (Burnt, Me, ABCrabb, and Lena) admins?
Posted on 26 May 2018 - 12:16 PM
I think the highs were when we started hitting 300+ player games and then even further started having 1200+ ppl playing UHC at the same time. Low would definitely be now where the gamemode has been beat to death and there isn't anything left to do with it in Minecraft.Hope you are doing well buddy :)
Posted on 26 May 2018 - 12:48 PM
Basically what Gberry said, seeing the full minecraft twitch page log onto BL every time a game was hosted was definitely the height of BL inside of UHC.The current low is now, where I don't think games are even being hosted frequently.
