In terms of context related to online games, it means something like this
"lag is when massive amounts of packet loss occurs"
e.g. lag is when people literally freeze up
Is this actually what is happening? Because I have YET to see it (except for at the beginning of the week)
yea this is actually what's happening, people tend to freeze for a second or two, and then the next tick i'll get 4 or 5 hits on them (even thought they're not near me)
sometime this week I'll try and record what's happening exactly
sorry for all the hate @MasterGberry , I know that you and the other admins are trying your guys' hardest to get everything right in this network, and the amount of progress that this server has made is amazing, but the lag has been keeping me from being more active MIDDAY especially

also I honestly don't think it's badlion fault that's causing the lag, but OVH, because im getting the same lag on kohi (although not as bad) and minehq where the lag is worse than herePosted on 09 March 2015 - 01:59 AM
I have heard numerous times that usually NA1 is laggy, but NA2 is fine.Posted on 09 March 2015 - 02:00 AM

not the case for me, when i lag i lag on both server ALTHOUGH the lag on NA2 is SLIGHTLY better i think strictly correlated to the player count

Idk, maybe the host can't handle it anymore/it's slowing down ?Posted on 09 March 2015 - 04:36 AM
we should get a host located in iceland#mycroz'sbestideas

Hello my good sir.
Do you happen to have a qualification in networking? Do you understand system architecture? Can you explain how a router works? Do you understand what an Ethernet cable is? Do you know binary? Can you explain to me how the CPU communicates with the Ethernet port on my servers? Can you explain to me how the internet hops work? Can you explain to me what the flaws are with the internet? Can you explain the TCP window frame system? Can you explain to me how to make it so my packets aren't lost along the way to a location? Can you explain how to identify good valid packets to bad packets? Can you explain to me how to write a network application? Can you explain what a transistor is? Can you explain how the transistors work together to operate as a CPU? Can you explain all of the different operations of a CPU? Can you explain to me what lag actually is? Can you differentiate between lag and dropped packets? Can you explain to me how packets are rejected?
If you can answer all of those questions that you probably understand enough about networking to actually open up your fucking mouth. If not, shut it.
Seriously tired of the bitching here people. If it was an easy fucking problem to fix don't you think it would be fixed? We have the most advanced anti-cheat in existence, amazing tab lists, fucking ridiculously optimized server code that can support 800 player pvp servers and 300-400 player UHC's, and yet you think fixing lag is an easy thing to do?
Rekt.

Where is this server hosted? Because i get no "lag" unless its my internet not the server laggingPosted on 10 March 2015 - 12:29 AM

Most of my "lag" that I determine not to be on my end is not packet loss, yes. The servers themselves seem not to have packets being lost or rejected, it feels more like a sort of extra delay. In other words, my ping itself hasn't changed, (at least when I ping na.badlion.net in my command prompt.) but the delay for melee hits and a bow shot happening after firing seems to have inexplicably increased, especially as of the season change, and even moreso over the last few days than ever before. When I'm actually lagging myself, I can almost always tell, because I'm keeping a hawks eye on my connection due to its own instability.
If I have to be honest, I believe this "lag" is partly why I can maintain such a high ELO in ranked SG when I can barely hold 1900+ in any potion PvP ladder, even the ones I consider myself really good at. Hits on SG feel amazingly smooth and responsive on their isolated servers, and I don't really believe that to be an illusion. UHC's, by late game, even feel a lot better than potion PvP. 24-100 player holding servers just tend to feel a lot better from my experience.
Out of curiosity, does GCheat hold back "letting a hit through" until it "checks it" to ensure no hacks are involved, or does it just let it through to "check it" when it can? The kind of lag people are reporting isn't a packet loss/ping problem, so yes, nobody can prove anything there. I believe (without any strong evidence of such admittedly) it to simply be that the server isn't taking action on client packets as soon as it could be, and thus, more players = more load on GCheat = small delay on hits. I'm no expert by any means, though.
"Lag" such as this is something SixZo and I have talked about on several occasions. Some places, like MCSG, feel buttery smooth, and while we have slightly better ping there, it's not really that kind of smooth. It feels smooth from a server side, not the client side, as in, I even feel as if my opponents tend to have better ping and hits. Heck, there are other networks like Badlion that I also get 80 ping to but the delay is even more insane. That is, I can hit players just in my reach as they run from me, which is unusual if I was lagging, but there is major delay in the hit.
Something is going on server side in many servers that is simply bogging things down, or at least that's what it feels like. Badlion has it well in comparison to other places, especially since GCheat was ready for implementation, which honestly leads me to believe it's not a packet loss/high ping problem, but merely a server response delay problem for these particular "hit detection packets", not in general. The only place I don't see this problem to this day is MCGamer and their MCSG servers. To be fair, though, my thoughts on that could be a bit skewed due to my ping being somewhat (about 20-30ms) better there than almost anywhere else.

I made some changes to the network infrastructure, let me know if it feels better.
