This is fairly known glitch but, I haven't seen it reported yet. It takes hunger away faster if you take damage. Not sure but I think it's vanilla Minecraft trying to regen those hearts but it can't.
How to reproduce: Take damage and run and compare to not taking damage and running.

I think he's trying to say that this should be changed because you can't actually regenerate health?

Yep. Basically the game is trying to give you back hearts but it can't so you just take hunger. I'd say keep it the same as it gives initiative to be more careful, something people don't care about these days unless it's 5+ hearts

You can avoid it by purposefully not being at full hunger. In fact, I haven't done the math, but eating steak to get to 8.5 hunger points before a fight rather than 10 may even last you longer before you have to eat again because of wasted saturation.

I thought saturation added up, so if I was at 8 hunger and ate steak, I would be at 10 hunger + all the saturation, but I've only just assumed that.
