This is fairly known glitch but, I haven't seen it reported yet. It takes hunger away faster if you take damage. Not sure but I think it's vanilla Minecraft trying to regen those hearts but it can't.How to reproduce: Take damage and run and compare to not taking damage and running.

You can avoid it by purposefully not being at full hunger. In fact, I haven't done the math, but eating steak to get to 8.5 hunger points before a fight rather than 10 may even last you longer before you have to eat again because of wasted saturation.Posted on 20 June 2015 - 08:20 PM
I thought saturation added up, so if I was at 8 hunger and ate steak, I would be at 10 hunger + all the saturation, but I've only just assumed that.
